Responsibilities during an emergency evacuation

Employees:

  • Calmly proceed to the nearest exit and evacuate the building
  • Proceed to your division or department gathering area in the parking lot
  • Keep guests and visitors from unsafely leaving the gathering area
  • Immediately report to department attendance taker
  • Remain in division or department gathering area until “all clear” signal is given by the Superintendent or their proxy

Managers:

In addition to following the basic safety instructions above,

  • Provide leadership for swift, orderly evacuation, insist on 100% compliance
  • Check restrooms and conference rooms to ensure complete evacuation
  • Keep guests and visitors from unsafely leaving the gathering area
  • Assist attendance takers with the roll process
  • Remain in division or department gathering area until “all clear” signal is given by the Superintendent or their proxy
  • Ensure safe and orderly re-entry into the building

Facilities and Maintenance Group:

  • Convene at the fire alarm control panel (FACP) to determine validity of alarm (only when safe to do so)
  • Evaluate soundness/safety of building reentry
  • Be available to discuss building layout/location of emergency with first responders
  • Inform Command Post staff once building is safe for reentry.
  • NOTE: Custodial staff are to evacuate and await radio instruction.

Executive Staff (Cabinet):

  • Safely and calmly evacuate the building when the fire alarm is sounded
  • Ensure others are evacuating; provide leadership to ensure 100% compliance
  • Proceed to Command Post area
  • Discuss current building status with Facilities/Building Maintenance and Emergency Preparedness Administrator
  • Collect attendance records and confirm that all SCCOE staff are accounted for

Superintendent or their proxy issues an “all clear” signal when safe to re-enter the building
